An existing diversion channel which keeps water away from the main barge dredging operation within the mining site was being undermined on the slopes. The area is prone to frequent flash flooding.
To minimise the risk of flooding, the client decided a new channel further upstream from the working area was required.
" Galvanised Reno® 6x2x0.17m Mattresses and underlying bidim® A34 were used to create a protected slope on the new diversion channel. Approximately 1.3km of Reno mattress was installed. Reno’s were installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions."
Other products used were the biodegradable Jute Master, to trap and encourage seed and resulting native vegetation.
Environmental issues are foremost in the mining operation, and the Reno® Mattress uses natural materials and has a proven history in this type of application. Gabions were also used with associated culvert protection works.
