Geofabrics Expertise in Roads and Working Areas

Geofabrics Australasia™ engages our world wide partners to provide solutions that encompass all road types, from temporary access tracks to high volume haul roads. Our expertise ensures the right geosynthetic product is selected to improve site specific ground conditions, and the performance of site soils available. This ensures maximum cost benefits for the client through less imported material, faster construction timeframes and less maintenance shutdowns. In the age of mine automation, better roadway surfaces translate to higher production volume output, and higher returns for investors.

The unique design conditions on mines requires roads that are generally unsealed, have low traffic volumes and may contain high load conditions. The footprint will often demand road construction over poor ground conditions, and using site soils brings huge economic benefit over ideal road building aggregates. Drainage is a key aspect and must be designed with site aggregates.

The wide range of Geofabrics roads solutions for mining incorporates different engineering design strategies and an understanding of specific site conditions is critical to project success. When a client requests a solution, the Geofabrics Mining Technical Hub will consider a range of products available, with specific design strategies that are backed by 35 years of project history to provide a recommendation that is technically better and more cost effective.

Our solution systems have been used extensively in mining applications around Australasia and the world, and are supported with extensive research and design support. If your problem has occurred previously, we know how to solve it, and if it is new, we want you as an industry partner to research and create a solution in our designated GRID R&D Laboratory.

New Road - Construction on Soft Soil

NEW ROADS
– CONSTRUCTING ON SOFT GROUND

The need to construct embankments and roads over structurally weak ground is regularly encountered both for new mine infrastructure development and rehabilitation of waste storages. Geofabric’s solutions;

  • Enable site access for people and machines by building on the right Geogrid, Geoweb or High Strength Geotextile. Turnkey expertise is required as design must link to the installation process to maximise performance.
  • A High Strength Geotextile or Geogrid to provide reinforcement, will separate ground soils from introduced material and provide reinforcement and key drainage functions.
  • A Geoweb or Geogrid Stabilisation Solution to improve structural performance of the available road building material, facilitates superior road performance with poor soils, and thinner depth pavements when used with ideal road building aggregates.

TenCate High Strength Geotextiles on Extremely Soft Soils

TenCate high strength geotextiles can be laid directly on low bearing capacity soils to increase the shear strength of the fill material and see an increase in foundation bearing capacity. This enables rapid site access and construction, ordinarily only achieved through high volumes of imported soil, left to consolidate over an extended period.

The Geotextile both separates introduced material and provides a reinforcement function, so understanding the soil parameters and installation method onsite is critical to correct Geotextile selection. For critical tailings applications design must consider the Polymer utilised to manufacture the product, which will see loss of tensile performance if incompatible to site chemistry. The Geofabrics GRID and Technical Hub are well versed to support with this expertise.

Tensar Geogrid Mechanical Stabilisation

The Tensar TriAx  is the most advanced geogrid in today’s market and the result of 30 years continual innovation and development in designing superior Roads, Embankments and Working Platforms . The key Tensar design principle is to mechanically stabilise pavement aggregates that interact with the Geogrid, which results in a positive shear response through the pavement depth and a structurally superior formation. To achieve maximum benefit, the choice of Geogrid must be designed to the site soils available, and linked to the construction process and load conditions. The net result is a site-specific cost saving by implementing a thinner pavement that achieves the same performance, or the same depth road with far less rutting potential and surface maintenance interruptions.

GEOWEB Mechanical Stabilisation

A Geoweb Cellular Confinement System can be laid above a bidim geotextile, to provide a surface stabilisation system for road building over soft ground conditions. The structure distributes surface stresses extremely effectively to prevent rutting at the surface, whilst also allowing thin pavement construction using low quality soil. When filled with granular material, the Geoweb can provide a free drainage pavement layer with high performance. It is especially useful to repair localised areas that experience repeat rutting or loss of service condition.

Geofabrics bidim or High-Strength Geotextile Drainage Blankets

Road and embankment construction over soft ground will often lead to release of groundwater that can impact structural performance. The use of bidim nonwoven or TenCate High Porosity Geotextiles enclosing a granular drainage layer will relieve pore water pressure, and enable linear consolidation over time. The choice of a nonwoven bidim or High Strength Woven is critical to enable a geotextile structure that resists mechanical damage, but has superior filtration performance. The choice of Geotextile is designed to the damage potential of aggregate available, with specific filter properties for site soils. The Geofabrics GRID Technical Hub can provide historic expertise and review the opportunity to test with site specific materials in this regard.

New Roads - Reduce Imported Materials

NEW ROADS
– REDUCING COSTS OF IMPORTED MATERIAL

Compared to conventional construction methods, the use of geosynthetics at the subgrade or within the pavement is an effective design option to reduce pavement thickness and lower the volume costs of sourcing ideal construction material.

The solution with most cost benefit will challenge traditional road design with aggregate alone, so requires both design expertise and project history that Geofabrics can provide.

  • The solutions of either a Geotextile, Geogrid or Geoweb can be evaluated by desktop, but the real economic benefit is achieved by applying actual site conditions.
  • Analysis of subgrade conditions, road building aggregates available, and traffic volumes and type, will link to a Geosynthetic product that provides maximum economic and environmental benefits.

Tensar Geogrid Mechanical Stabilisation

The Tensar TriAx  was developed from 30 years of testing and empiricism, to establish a Geogrid structure that interacts most efficiently with road building aggregates, and maximises their structural performance. The result is a thinner pavement depth with Tensar Geogrid inclusion that performs the same as the full depth granular material.

The cost benefit achievable is a function of the interaction between Geogrid type and aggregate available onsite. The Geofabrics Mining Technical Hub and GRID Laboratory has extensive experience in critical design parameters that enable correct Geogrid selection, and with our industry partner Tensar International can ensure the solution that provides the best cost benefits

Ten Cate High Strength Geotextiles – Maximising Insitu conditions

TenCate high strength geotextiles can be laid directly on low bearing capacity soils to reinforce the shear stresses of the fill material and observe an increase in foundation bearing capacity. This increase in bearing capacity is normally only achieved by introducing high volumes of imported soil, which present as costly, unsafe and environmentally less friendly. The Geotextile both separates and provides a reinforcement function, so understanding the soil parameters and construction method onsite is critical to ensuring correct Geotextile selection. The Geofabrics Mining Technical Hub and GRID Laboratory has extensive experience in these critical design parameters and with our industry partner Ten Cate Geosynthetics can ensure the solution provides the best cost benefits.

Geoweb Pavements – Utilise Insitu Soils to Build Roads

The Geoweb system consists of a robust three-dimensional structure housing a network of interconnected cells that confine road building soils. The confinement action prevents erosion and improves the structural performance of soils traditionally not preferred by designers for road building. The cost benefit is a road that is structurally better with less depth of pavement, and presents the option to build roads from cheaper, locally sourced soil material. The Geoweb cellular 3-D confinement system comes in collapsed, lightweight panels which can be rapidly deployed easily and safely onsite, ideally suited to build roads not constructable to traditional methods.

ROAD MAINTENANCE
– LESS MAINTAINENANCE, HAUL CYCLE SPEEDS, TYRE
WEAR

The effect of Geosynthetic reinforcement serves to prevent surface rutting, which is the key economic driver in terms of road serviceability and automated fleet performance.

  • For the same depth of pavement with a Geogrid or Geoweb inclusion, surface deflection and rutting will increase the asset maintenance intervals by up to 500%.
  • This results in reduced labour and plant costs but also haul cycle speeds that are critical to production output are maintained as planned.
  • For temporary and low traffic roads onsite, a thin pavement that incorporates a Geosynthetic can enable access rapidly, reduce the need for large volumes of imported material and limit environmental impacts of full depth construction.

Haul Road Construction

HAUL ROAD CONSTRUCTION

The key aspect of Haul Road design is to ensure minimise rutting and road surface changes that will impact traffic movements and cause interruptions. The cost impacts on production of reducing truck speeds and “wear and tear” of haul fleets is well in excess of the costs of good haul road construction.

A carefully chosen Geogrid or Geoweb can be used to mechanically confine the aggregate that is used to construct the road and prevent it moving laterally under traffic loads. This results in a surface that is more resistant to rutting and surface deflections, requiring less maintenance, better OHS management and less dust generation. There is also potential to create pavements with less depth of aggregate material, maximising the use of readily available site soils.

Underground Roads

UNDERGROUND ROADS

Underground roads are critical to production and operational efficiency, and road maintenance is significantly challenge by the space to operate and material available to construct. It is often geotechnical anomalies and incorrect drainage that creates areas of high subsidence or instability, as well as unacceptable surface rutting. A regular Geosynthetic solution implemented can use Geogrid and Geoweb stabilisation methods with site infill material to prevent surface rutting. This also allows improved performance for thinner pavement depths, which are critical when considering operating heights available. Geotextiles can also be used to bridge subsidence created by the impacts of blasting stopes or roadways either above or below the area of concern. The construction of thin underground pavements requires key inputs from the Geofabrics Mining Technical Hub, but can lead to significant maintenance cost savings when implemented correctly.

Airport Runways

AIRPORT RUNWAYS

For airport runways, the important aspect is to limit surface rutting that could impact the ability of air traffic to take off and land. It is rarely the loads that determine runway performance onsite, it will be a structural or drainage problems within or surrounding the pavement. The incorporation of pavement reinforcing Geotextiles and Geogrids will limit structural issues translating to surface rutting, and a well-designed site drainage system will limit the damaging effects of water.

Geofabrics Megaflo Drainage

Good road drainage is essential to maintain roads at optimal performance levels and often overlooked in new road construction. The Megaflo® drainage system is a cheaper alternative to traditional drainage systems. Megaflo® halves the installation time making it ideal for projects with tight construction deadlines. The Megaflo® drainage system requires only a narrow trench or less deep trench than round pipe, so installation costs are significantly reduced. Because of its stiff structure and high flow velocity, there is also less risk of siltation.

The Megaflo® panel profile is widely used in mining applications because of its high compressive strength and can be manufactured with various polymers according to the mine chemistry onsite, which is critical to ensure drainage performance.

Drainage Geocomposites below Pavements

When building roads in areas that interrupt natural water courses, or are susceptible to elevated groundwater volumes, the use of a Drainage Geocomposite that consists of a Geonet with bidim Geotextiles both sides, can be used to drain subsurface water without allowing it to impact on pavement structure. If volumes are higher, a Geoweb Cellular Confinement System can incorporate free draining aggregates to drain and provide a positive reinforcement property to ensure road longevity. The Geofabrics Mining Technical Hub and GRID Laboratory has extensive experience in critical design parameters that enable correct Geocomposite and Geoweb selection, and with our industry partner PRESTO International can ensure a solution that provides the best cost benefits.

Roadside Channel Drains

Good channel design requires sediment retention of the subgrade. When designing open channels onsite, the use of Geofabrics bidim® geotextiles is critical to resist erosion due to surface velocities. The choice of Geotextile will be determined by the channel rip-rap properties to ensure rock placement does not cause unacceptable damage and loss of function.

Geotextiles for Construction in Coastal Zones

TenCate high strength or Geofabrics Texcel® Non-woven geotextiles can be laid directly on tidal flats that have intermittent geotechnical properties or directly on the seafloor to provide a reinforcement function to increase foundation bearing capacity. This allows rapid access, and a reduction in volume of construction aggregates and soils which are the critical economic driver to project success.

The Geotextile selection must consider both the interaction with the soil in this case, but different Geotextile types will both float and sink according to the polymer chosen. This results in a design that cannot be separated from the installation process, and Geofabrics extensive experience in coastal and subsea installations is critical to success.

Tensar Geogrid Mechanical Stabilisation

Tensar Geogrids and separation geotextiles are used to redistribute the tensile forces within the road and prevent the mixing of fines and coarse aggregate. The increased road strength allows thin pavements to be constructed with a Geogrid over soft ground or for quick access in coastal applications. When the full pavement depth is constructed, Tensar Geogrids provide a mechanical stabilisation function within the embankment, that results in significant cost savings and volume of the soil material required. The Geofabrics Mining Technical Hub and GRID Laboratory has extensive experience in critical design parameters that enable correct Geogrid selection, and with our industry partner Tensar International can ensure the solution that provides the best cost benefits.
