The effect of Geosynthetic reinforcement serves to prevent surface rutting, which is the key economic driver in terms of road serviceability and automated fleet performance. 

  • For the same depth of pavement with a Geogrid or Geoweb inclusion, surface deflection and rutting will increase the asset maintenance intervals by up to 500%.
  • This results in reduced labour and plant costs but also haul cycle speeds that are critical to production output are maintained as planned.

The key aspect of Haul Road design is to ensure minimise rutting and road surface changes that will impact traffic movements and cause interruptions. The cost impacts on production of reducing truck speeds and “wear and tear” of haul fleets is well in excess of the costs of good haul road construction.

A carefully chosen Geogrid or Geoweb can be used to mechanically confine the aggregate that is used to construct the road and prevent it moving laterally under traffic loads. This results in a surface that is more resistant to rutting and surface deflections, requiring less maintenance, better OHS management and less dust generation. There is also potential to create pavements with less depth of aggregate material, maximising the use of readily available site soils.

Underground roads are critical to production and operational efficiency, and road maintenance is significantly challenge by the space to operate and material available to construct. It is often geotechnical anomalies and incorrect drainage that creates areas of high subsidence or instability, as well as unacceptable surface rutting. A regular Geosynthetic solution implemented can use Geogrid and Geoweb stabilisation methods with site infill material to prevent surface rutting. This also allows improved performance for thinner pavement depths, which are critical when considering operating heights available. Geotextiles can also be used to bridge subsidence created by the impacts of blasting stopes or roadways either above or below the area of concern. The construction of thin underground pavements requires key inputs from the Geofabrics Mining Technical Hub, but can lead to significant maintenance cost savings when implemented correctly.

On mine sites, process storages and tanks are used to store specific contaminants that present high environmental risk. The key design requirements for these storages is very different to solid waste containments where there is only a head of water acting on the lining system. As such, it is critical to choose the correct lining system which would generally comprise a Polymeric Geomembrane. Due to the elevated risk of environmental harm, critical applications may consist of dual Geomembranes with a Geonet leak collection layer. Once a waste storage facility has reached capacity, environmental concerns may necessitate the capping and sealing of the storage dam. Typical concerns include site access and reuse, rainfall infiltration, stability and gas emissions. The desired end use would govern the design of a suitable system which may include a number of geosynthetic products. Sealing of the facility can be achieved by capping the waste with a suitable geosynthetic clay liner or composite lining system. This will prevent ingress of water, gas emissions and contain the waste.

SOLUTIONS FOR CAPPING TAILINGS DAMS AND PITS

The first challenge in remediation of mine waste storages is often based around access to the site to construct the capping layer. Geofabrics has design strategies that enable the use of High Strength Geotextiles or Geogrids to enable cap access and create a bearing capacity that can be trafficked. Unlike civil engineering, the liquor chemistry must be considered in terms of the solution, as Geosynthetic stress-strain behaviour will change if the polymer is impacted by acid or high pH environments.

Good road drainage is a primary factor in maintaining road serviceability. Geofabrics Megaflo® drainage system is a cheaper alternative to traditional roadside drainage systems. Mine entry portals present critical OHS risk to site operators due to the potential for slope instability and falling debris. Rainfall erosion and wind sediment movements can cause rail formation degradation problems but also present major risk to the environmental perception of the rail operator. Erosion causes the mobilisation of formation sediments to cause piping and major instability. Geofabrics has a range of surface erosion solution that either provide a surface erosion protection, prevent high velocity sediment movements or enable the development of revegetation strategies that are required in environmental plans.

Erosion can occur along well defined flow paths and as overland flow in shallow depths, known as sheet flow. Several types of geosynthetics are used to prevent or repair erosion problems.
